Traveling with Teens

I have the honor of traveling with my oldest daughter this week on a four hour road trip. It’s been a long time since it’s just been two of us in a vehicle for that long…without anyone else. To be honest, I am excited about it for several reasons. I love one on one time with my kids, as it doesn’t happen often. And in our home, we move at such a fast pace that often times, our conversations don’t have time to go beyond logistics of who needs to be where and at what time. This longer road trip will afford us the time to dig in and talk about things that we don’t get to chat about normally. And there is something about car trips, sitting side by side, having chats. It’s just easier to talk about deeper issues when you can’t stare at each other, or when you have some music playing in the background. I am not going to go on this trip unprepared. I am going to have a plan. I am going to have a playlist of music to set the tone. A list of questions to get conversation going in the direction I would like, and I hope to make it a time for us to grow and for her to hear my heart a little… my hopes and dreams for her. I plan to use this time to lift her up and tell her how proud I am of her.

I also see this trip as a time to teach her about the ins and outs of driving. She is 14 and is wanting to take drivers ed soon. I am not ready, but I know she is. She WILL be driving before I know it. I can talk about the laws and random things that she will be learning along the way so it’s not new news to her. I think we will probably talk about vehicles and what models she likes and what might be affordable for her, as she plans to buy her first car with money she is saving. I am going to point out Hyundai’s to her as they are a great value. I am going to have her pull up Apple Valley Hyundai to see that NEW cars can be less than $15K!

I am really excited about this trip and hope it’s memories made. What do you like to do when you have one on one time with your teens?
