My daughter and I were invited to see Disney’s Brave last night. She’s 7 and was SO excited to see this movie. The previews really pumped it up to be something full of action and excitement…and yes, it was! I was warned that there would be some very scary parts, centered around the bears in the woods…so I prepared Chloe for this.
She was ready for these scenes and yet was still on edge. This could be because we watched it in 3D. If you have a little one (younger then 8, be prepared!) Now, my thoughts on the movie…
I thought that this was a familiar story…too familiar. It felt too much like Tangled. Girl wants to explore and choose her journey in life, mom tries to control her, girl rebels, mom suffers…and in the end all is well. The bears roaring reminded me very much of the beast in Beauty and the Beast. I did, however, like that this movie took place in Scottland. I enjoyed the accent and the irish humor. There was plenty to enjoy as an adult, that was over a kids head. There was NO love story in this movie and I personally did not feel emotionally connected to this one. I shed no tears, and felt so heart strings tugged. If I had to say this was more of a “guy” or “girl” movie, I would definitely say guy. There was tons of fighting, archery, fencing, and such. The men were burly and I didn’t find any of them to be “handsome.” Also, there was not even ONE catchy song!
If I were going to pay for this movie, I would make it a matinée and if you are taking kids, skip the 3D as it would only add to their fear during the scary parts.
