It’s finally summer! I thought the spring months would never end… mostly because we were cooped up in the house, quarantined and the weather wasn’t great. Now it’s June, and warm, and splash pads and pools are opening! Kids are eager to jump into the pool and explore the freedoms of summer…but do they have the skills to do this with confidence?

Now is the time to sign up for swim lessons and polish those skills. Last weekend there were three drownings in a lake near me, and I think that was THREE too many. A few facts that might help put things into perspective for you:

  • Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental death in the US for ages 14 and under. (CDC)
  • Participation in formal swim lessons reduces risk of drowning by 88%! (NIH)
  • Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in the US for ages 4 and under. (CDC)

My son is four! He has been in swim lessons for two years now and I love the confidence we all feel when at the pool. He has the skills to back float if he gets tired, or climb out safely.

If you are looking for a (safe) place to enroll your kiddos for this summer, check out AquaKids Mckinney. They are offering camps, one on one private lessons, as well as group lessons. They have taken extra measures to make sure all who enter the building are well and social distanced as well. Their prices are great and if you are calling around, I think you will find a lot of places AREN’T doing swim lessons this summer at all…so hurry before they book up!
