I have bought red velvet cupcakes on numerous occasions and my family loves them. I have even tried making them. The mess of the red food coloring was just too much for me to handle. Recently I was given an opportunity to try out a Blue Velvet cupcake recipe and thought that it sounded like a fun adventure. I will say that I was very nervous about the clean up as this recipe calls for a WHOLE bottle of blue food coloring. As part of this fun blogging opportunity, I was given a bottle of Dawn Ultra to tackle the mess…and here is what we found:

The recipe, listed below, is easy and I loved making the cupcakes from scratch. I did not have cake flour, which the recipe called for but was able to make my own.

BAKING HACK: You can make “cake flour” yourself if you do not buy it specifically. For every cup of flour you use, take out two tablespoons of flour and replace with cornstarch. Sift this together over a bowl and you are good to go!

When making the cupcake recipe, I followed the instructions to a T and noticed that I was using the ENTIRE BOTTLE of blue food coloring. This made the batter a fun color, but I was wondering what it would do to my bowl and spatula. Much to my surprise, I handwashed the bowl and spatula with minimal efforts and Dawn did all of the work for me. I seriously didn’t have to do much work at all. Dawn cut thru the food coloring and the grease and left both clean and shiny. I love making small changes in my routines that give me more time with my family in the evening.

  1. I no longer make scrambled eggs because of how they stick to the pans. My worst kitchen nightmare is how cookie sheets turn brown over time. No matter how much I clean them I can never avoid having them turn brown and eventually black.

  2. I have never tried Dawn Ultra, but if it cuts grease as well as they say, then I definitely need it.

  3. Jessie C. says

Exploding eggs in the microwave is my worst kitchen nightmare to this day.

  4. Dawn Monroe says

My biggest kitchen nightmare is when we cook lasagna! That cheese makes a sticky mess!

  5. Jessica To says

My biggest issue was when I had a creamy soup on the stove and someone came to the door. By the time I got back to the soup, it was burnt to the bottom of the pot.

  6. My worst mess to clean is salmon/fish skin stuck to the casserole dish! Nasty! 🙂

  7. Any leftover pasta or saucy that isn’t put away.

  8. Leigh Anne Borders says

I hate it when things get stuck to the pan and I can’t get it off easily!

  9. Mine is also trying to clean eggs out of a non stick skillet.

  10. Sarah Hall says

My biggest kitchen nightmare is when my husband made chili and let it burn on the kettle.
