It is officially fall weather now and the storms are rolling in, weekly as it feels. I try to avoid getting out and about in rainy weather as I feel it brings out the worst (moods) in a lot of people. Okay, I shouldn’t speak so general, how about it brings out the worst during carpool hours? I don’t enjoy the hassle of umbrellas, but honestly that isn’t what makes me so anxious. It’s other drivers and the thought of losing control of my vehicle. I have found the following five tips to be super helpful in restoring confidence on rainy days.
.) First and foremost, check the tread on your tires. Keeping your tires rotated and replace them when recommended. It is very hard to get good traction with balding tires.
.) Wait 15-30 minutes after the rain starts before getting on the road. Roads are typically the most slick right after rain begins, before the oils are fully washed off of the surface of the road.
.) Replace your windshield wipers when recommended. Having good visibility is very important to staying safe. If they are cleaning the windshield well, chances of you seeing objects from all sides is much greater!
.) Lower the distractions in your vehicle if possible. Having phone on silent, radio turned down, and other noise at bay is helpful to hearing sirens, people honking, etc. I like to stay super alert during rainy drives. Knowing that road conditions are not ideal, it helps to concentrate with silence.
.) Try to avoid driving at night if possible on rainy days. Lights reflect different on wet surfaces and can make it difficult to see.
