I was raised by a man who did most of the car repairs himself. Infact, my great grandpa was doing his own oil changes well into his 70s. I am not that skilled and am happy to hand over some money to the professionals on items like that simply because I do not have the skill or want to on doing things like that. However, there ARE some things that I can easily change myself that save TONS of money. Below is a list of those items and how often I personally change them:
1.) Air filter (I wait until the professionals who are doing the oil change tell me that I need that done, and I do it myself!)
2.) Wiper Blades, you will know when you need to do this. They are fairly inexpensive to replace.
3.) Battery, I only replace this when mine dies. Thankfully this hasn’t happened very often. Ted Britt Chevrolet has a rebate for this!
4.) Brake Pads, I let the professionals do this as it’s more complicated then I can handle
5.) Lights, these are really easy to replace and you can buy new bulbs at your local parts store.
If your car has a blown engine or something that is catastrophic, it may cost you more money than the car is worth to fix it. In those cases, it might make more sense to sell the junk car for $500 and then invest that into a newer vehicle. Sometimes, it’s not economical to continuously repair a breaking down car, so know when to cut your losses.
