I went to the dentist this morning and opted to enjoy some “laughing gas” as they worked on my mouth. It doesn’t put one to sleep, but it does help them to relax while the dentist does his work. I am not one to put extras into my body, but I get really nervous about shots in the mouth, pain, and nerve issues. I hadn’t had nitrous oxide in long time and forgot what it was like. I think my last time to use it was about 20 years ago.
I needed a root canal and this would require quite a bit of numbing, so I opted to pay the extra $30 for the laughing gas. When it first went on, I remember feeling like it was just oxygen blowing…then I started to feel funny. It’s such a strange sensation because you are fully awake, yet you are zoned out. You hear and can respond to everything, yet you feel delayed. The dentist goes to work and you just lay there listening.
Today was my 2nd time to use it as I had to get the permanent filling and fitted for a crown…about a 2 hr procedure. I felt nervous and somewhat trapped after getting it. I remember feeling nervous, yet like I didn’t care. One of my biggest fears is not being in control of myself, my thoughts, actions or body. I felt as though I was nervous, I didn’t have a way out of it. The problem with laughing gas is that you don’t get to rest while using it. Your mind is spinning with tons of thoughts, yet your body is relaxed and doesn’t care. It’s what I feel like when I can’t sleep at night and the reason that I take sleeping pills to fall asleep at night. My brain never stops, yet my body tires out. I can imagine that it will just get worse with time as I age.
I told my dentist that he needs to make it all a one stop shop…eye brow wax, mani/pedi…all while he works on my teeth. It’s genius really…I mean how often do you take 2 hours to sit and NOT move during your busy week? I would pay more to multitask!
I look like Darth Vader! I was already drifting into “I don’t care” when I took the pict. Took me about 5 trys! Do you use Laughing Gas when you go to the dentist? Think it’s worth the extra $30 out of pocket?
