I confess… my kids have called me a mean mom a few times. It wasn’t at the time of rules being dished out, but much later when they realized that not everyone has the same “rules!” Here are a few of the rules of my van:
1.) No colored drinks in the van. Yes, I make them get vanilla or clear slushes…or no slush at all.
2.) No eating crumbly foods… so no cheerios or goldfish…or crackers in general.
3.) No nail polish, lip stick, lip gloss, purfume. (I learned the hard way on this!)
4.) No candy, powders, suckers, or gum, or silly putty.
5.) No taking off shoes (stinky feet!!)
6.) No stickers on the windows
7.) No markers, crayons, or pens (my youngest daughter is creative and loves to decorate)
These all seem common sense to me but not all mamas follow the same rules. I can’t handle the mess. I don’t feel like they are missing out on childhood fun with these rules, but instead they are learning to respect a mutual living space.
Of course, having black carpet in the van shows a lot and maybe if it were a different color I might be a little less strict. And to be honest, they are getting older now and perhaps I could lighten up on a few of the rules. With a baby in tow now, we will keep some of the rules for him to follow too.
Oh and one last rule…if you leave it in the van, it’s MOMS! This helps with them to take their items out of the van each time.
